BIPOC communities are 7 times more likely to identify as gamers but less than 7% likely to find employment in the video game and Esports industries. Digital inequity and the digital divide are systemically robbing youth in Title 1 schools from obtaining college scholarships and job opportunities. This has resulted in widening the wage gap for marginalized and underrepresented youth. Esports is a multibillion dollar industry, with hundreds of high schools now hosting varsity programs and even more colleges and universities offering scholarships. Nutmeg State Games, New Britain Hurricanes Esports and World Wide Youth Networks have united to bring Esports to Connecticut, and want to ensure that underrepresented and marginalized youth have a place to compete on the big stage in front of college coaches and industry professionals. We are building a pathway for scholarships and jobs through Esports competitions. All funds will pay for youth programming, entry fees and support the ParaDYM Academy Orion/Asfaw Endowment Fund.
